She took the time to answer all our questions, spent time with Denis in all the activities he participates in outside the home (school, social group, respite home) ... working with Helene was a process of discovering who our son really is.
When first approached for Independent Facilitation we weren't sure Denis would benefit since he is non-verbal and fairly low functioning. We are glad we accepted as it was an incredibly worthwhile experience. The first deliverable was a detailed "Who is Denis" document which included information such as people in his life, his likes, how he communicates, a list of his signs, an action plan ... and so much more. We used this document when he went to a new respite home and they were very thankful for the details provided. It helped make his first stay a huge success. We signed up for Children at Risk's Date Nights and during the intake interview we shared it and they expressed that all parents should have something similar. Even more recently we hired a new worker for Denis to take him out into the community once a week ... I sent her the document and she said it was very helpful since she doesn't yet know Denis and would only get to know him over time. She thought the comment about if he could speak he wouldn't stop ... very cute and a true reflection of what she has seen so far :-)
Helene, the Independent Facilitator, was a pleasure to work with and honestly invested herself 100% into the process. It was a huge comfort to know she was only a phone call away. She took the time to answer all our questions, spent time with Denis in all the activities he participates in outside the home (school, social group, respite home), met with everyone involved in his life (in all capacities) and even spent a morning with us taking the buses through Ottawa (a favorite activity of Denis) getting to know him better. Working with Helene was a process of discovering who our son really is. The "Who is Denis" document reflects Denis 100%. It is something we will surely use for years to come.
